Centennial 1897 - 1997
Centennial Introduction
It was 100 years ago that a small but promising town decided to begin a local program to train teachers for its children. Thus began the San Diego Normal School, which has grown with that small town. Now the city is the second largest in California, as is itseducational institution, San Diego State University.
March 15, 1897, state legislation was passed to establish the San Diego Normal School, and that date is considered the birthdate of today's SDSU. Throughout 1997 the University and its community will celebrate 100 years of commitment to excellence and innovation as the city and its university acknowledge their partnership and what it has produced.
