Students are not allowed to make ANY schedule changes after the following schedule adjustment deadlines unless they have fully-documented evidence of serious and compelling reasons.

Beginning with fall 2009, students will need to adhere to two separate deadlines for adding and dropping classes. The last day to drop classes is now the 10th day of classes at 6 p.m., and the last day to add is the 12th day of classes at 6 p.m.

The specific schedule adjustment deadlines for fall 2009 are:

Students are responsible for initiating action for their own schedule adjustments. Check your schedule online in the SDSU WebPortal to make sure you are enrolled in the right classes before the schedule adjustment deadline.

Please note that faculty have the option to drop students by September 9 at 6 p.m. for non-attendance or lack of prerequisites.

Dropping a Course

To drop a course, log on to the registration system in the SDSU WebPortal. Follow the instructions given to drop the course by 6 p.m. on the 10th day of classes. See refunds for information and deadlines.

Adding a Course

To add a course, you must first obtain an add code from the instructor of the class. Then, log on to the registration system in the SDSU WebPortal and follow the instructions given to add the course by 6 p.m. on the 12th day of classes. You will need the schedule number that is given in the online class schedule AND the add code given by the instructor to complete the process.

WARNING: An add code can be used only once, so for your own protection, it should not be shared with others. Using an add code without the proper authorization from the instructor will result in disciplinary action.

Change of Grading Basis

Credit / No Credit: Students can change a class to Credit/No Credit through the registration system. Students must make changes to the grading basis for a class by the schedule adjustment deadline.

NOTE: There are limits to the number of courses you may take Cr/NC toward your baccalaureate degree. Students should be aware that courses in the major taken Cr/NC WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD THE UNIT REQUIREMENT FOR THE MAJOR. Refer to your General Catalog for details. No 600- or 700-numbered course may be taken for Cr/NC unless so designated in the Graduate Bulletin.

Audit: Obtain an Audit form from the Office of the Registrar. Return the completed form by the schedule adjustment deadline.

Late Registration

Late registration begins on the first day of classes and ends at 6 p.m. on the 12th class day of the semester. Students who have paid fees, but have not yet registered for classes, should follow the "Adding a Course" procedures. To register late, follow these steps:

  1. Pay all registration fees due at Cashiering Services, including the $25 late registration fee. To assure access to registration, early payment is encouraged.
  2. Obtain the add code from the instructor of the class in which you intend to register.
  3. Enroll in the class through the SDSU WebPortal by the add deadline.

Total Withdrawal From the University

Current students withdrawing from the university prior to the schedule adjustment deadline should go through the official withdrawal procedures in the Office of the Registrar. Dropping all courses does not constitute an official withdrawal. All new students withdrawing prior to the schedule adjustment deadline are required to reapply and be readmitted to the university for future semesters.

After the schedule adjustment deadline, withdrawals are only permitted for extremely serious, fully-documented cases involving health or accident. You must fill out a petition and green withdrawal card in addition to submitting documentation to the Office of the Registrar.

No refunds for total withdrawal will be issued for classes dropped after a certain date each semester (the point at which 60% of the semester has been completed - see the refund schedule).

Faculty-Initiated Drop for Non-Attendance

Within the first seven class days of the semester, a faculty member may drop students who fail to attend the first class session and are not in class at the very beginning of the second class session. Any student dropped by the instructor during this period will be notified of the action by e-mail. To reenroll, a student must receive an add code from the instructor and reenroll in the course within the first 12 class days of the semester.

Not all instructors will drop students who miss the first class session and the beginning of the second class session. Students are responsible for making sure the correct courses are on their schedules by the schedule adjustment deadlines. If they do not properly drop a course, they will receive a "WU" (withdrawal unauthorized), which counts as an “F” in their grade point average.
