Arts Alive SDSU's Discovery Series Returns for Fall
The visual and performing arts events highlight intersections among the arts, humanities and sciences to prompt conversations about meaningful issues.
Arts Alive SDSU continues its Discovery Series — a selection of curriculum-based art exhibitions and performances featuring student artists — this fall for the program’s second year, and its first for in-person events.
Organizers had to switch last year’s events to online platforms to comply with restrictions against gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as San Diego State University has resumed primarily in-person instruction for fall 2021, many of the events will take place in galleries and live performance venues on campus. However, online panel discussions will continue.
“The webinar format granted all of us access to guest artists and scholars who might not otherwise have been available,” said Eric Smigel, chair of Arts Alive SDSU and professor of music. “This proved to be such a valuable opportunity for our students that we’ve decided to continue with the online discussions this season, even when the corresponding art event will be produced in person.”
With the support of One SDSU, Arts Alive will host the interdisciplinary panel conversations in correlation with the events listed below. Guest artists and SDSU faculty from various academic units will discuss how the arts impact the understanding or critical interpretation of cultural topics. By bridging the arts with the humanities and sciences, the Discovery Series aims to affirm the value of the arts as an essential research practice. Arts Alive works with the School of Art and Design, the School of Music and Dance, and the School of Theatre, Television, and Film to produce the showcase.
The interdisciplinary panels will begin in late September.

The SDSU Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra will perform works of music on the themes of trauma, loss and the healing process.
