This year San Diego State University approaches a decade as a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), working continuously to support and uplift Latinx students, faculty, and staff.  This title, defined by the U.S. Department of Education as “an eligible institution” with “an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students.”

As of Fall 2021, 31.8% of SDSU’s undergraduate population is Hispanic according to SDSU’s Analytic Studies and Institutional Research team.

In conjunction with HSI Affairs, the Chicanx Studies Department, multiple Cultural Centers, and the Latinx Student Union, SDSU will be hosting events to honor Hispanic Heritage Month, starting on Sept. 15.

Originally designed as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first piece of legislation celebrating Latinx contributions to the U.S., as well as several Latin American independence days also occurring that same week. Twenty years later, Pres. H.W. Bush expanded Hispanic Heritage Week to Hispanic Heritage Month, what it is currently known as. Every U.S. President has acknowledged Hispanic Heritage Month every year on Sept. 15.

Here are some upcoming events highlighting the wealth of experiences and diversity within Latinx cultures and identities.

Latinx Community Social

The Latinx/Hispanic Community of SDSU invites you to join us at a social to connect with the SDSU Latinx/Hispanic/Chicanx familia on Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The Social will welcome new staff members and to connect them to our community of Latinx faculty, staff, and students. We will also recognize all those who have earned promotions and accolades this year (e.g., promotions, promotions to tenure, professor, and awards). This social, conceived and inspired through recommendations from the HSI Campus Advisory Committee and the HSI Student Advisory Board, is being planned in collaboration with the Latinx/Chicanx/Hispanic Faculty and Staff Association, the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, the Latina Network, the Latinx Resource Center, the Undocumented Resource Center, the Latinx Student Union, the Center for Intercultural Relations, and MEChA (among others). Latinx Resource Center is providing additional information
