Concurrent Enrollment Authorization

F-1 and J-1 degree-seeking students are allowed to enroll concurrently at more than one academic institution provided the combined enrollment equals a full course of study. Concurrent Enrollment Authorization is granted by the ISC and is only required for students who will be under-enrolled at SDSU (less than 12 units for undergraduate students and 9 units for graduate students) while taking classes at another academic institution to reach full-time status.
SDSU students on concurrent enrollment usually attend local community colleges. The other institution must be authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to issue an I-20 or DS-2019 Form.

Coursework taken at other institutions must be acceptable toward your degree. You are responsible for communicating with your SDSU academic advisor to confirm that credits earned at the other school will be counted toward your degree at SDSU.

The majority of the coursework for each semester must be taken at SDSU; thus, the total number of units at SDSU must be greater than the total units at the other school. When searching for classes at other schools, please keep in mind the online class restrictions: 1) Undergraduate students may participate in one online class that is a maximum of 5 units or multiple online classes that total a maximum of 3 units. The maximum applies to the total of classes taken at all schools in a semester. 2) Graduate students may participate in one online class that is a maximum of 3 units or multiple online classes that total a maximum of 3 units. The maximum applies to the total of classes taken at all schools in a semester.

After you find one or more courses you wish to take at another school, contact that school's International Student Admissions Office to ask how to enroll in the course(s). Many schools will require a letter from the ISC to enroll in their courses. To request the letter, complete the online Letter Request Form (for Authorization to Take Additional Courses Outside of SDSU). Your letter will be sent to you by email after 7 business days.
If you will be under-enrolled at SDSU, after enrolling in the course(s) at the other school you must complete a Concurrent Enrollment Authorization Request and upload proof of enrollment at the other school by the Schedule Adjustment Deadline. Proof must include all of the following and can be a screenshot or letter: date of proof, your name, name of other school, semester and year, course number(s), and unit(s). Please note that our office is not liable for any courses that do not transfer to SDSU. Our office is solely responsible for authorization of maintaining your immigration status while taking courses at another institution.

The ISC will contact you mid-semester to ask for a current proof of enrollment from the other school to confirm that you are still enrolled full-time for your immigration status.

Immediately after the semester/quarter ends at the other school, remember to order the official transcript and have it sent to SDSU so the course(s) can be counted towards your degree program.
